The world renowned Mayon Volcano roared back to life spurting incandescent molten rock and spewing clouds of smoke and ash in the sky as it seemingly spread a red carpet welcome for the 103 geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central and Regional Offices nationwide who participated in the recently conducted 2018 Geoscience Workshop hosted by MGB Regional Office No. V on February 1 to 7 at Patio de San Jose Resort and Convention Center, Malilipot, Albay.

It was the same month last year when the national gathering was held in the Region to standardize field mapping methodologies and organize pre-fieldwork, fieldwork and post fieldwork activities, to capacitate young geologists of the Bureau who conducted the Quadrangle Mapping, and to provide venue to discuss detailed operational plans for the execution of the Geological Mapping Program in Bicol and CALABARZON Regions. This year, the geologists returned to the same workshop with their hard-earned fruits of their labor.

The six-day activity dealt more on finalization and harmonization of 1:50,000 scale geohazard maps, presentations of accomplishments for Quadrangle Geological Mapping Project of Regions 5 and CALABARZON for CY 2017 and 2018 implementation on targets and schedules of the different programs: Vulnerability Risk Assessment (VRA) and updating of geohazard maps, VRA- IEC campaign, Groundwater Risk Assessment, and on Mineral Reservation.
