It is worth remembering that 123 years ago, on November 28, 1898, by virtue of the decree signed by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, Departamento de Formento or Department of Public Welfare was created, and on November 29, 1898, the Mines section was formed.  After several reconstitutions, it was only in 1974 that the Bureau of Mines was transferred to DENR pursuant to PD no. 461. A year after, Bureau of Mines was renamed Bureau of Mines and Geosciences with additional mandate as well as authority. The passage of Republic Act 7942, otherwise known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 on March 3, 1995, and DAO 96-40, the Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 7942, transformed the MGB into a line Bureau.

MGB still stands through 123 years championing sustainability in mining and geosciences, and a more responsive mining industry to its community.
