The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. V (MGB R.O.-V) has finally completed its Information Education and Communication (IEC) Caravan on Geohazard Awareness and Disaster Preparedness in the Bicol Region.
The last lap of the IEC Caravan was concluded in Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte with a total of 1,045 participants from the municipalities from Camaligan, Calabanga, Canaman, Daet, San Lorenzo Ruiz, Vinzons, Paracale, Mercedes, and Talisay last September 25 to October 13, 2017.
The seminar-workshop oriented the participants on topics, such as “Introduction to Geologic Hazards and their Effects, 1:10,000 Assessment of Geologic Hazards in the municipality, Reading and Understanding Geohazard Maps; Making use of Geohazard maps for Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, Workshop on Map Reading, Barangay Disaster Preparedness, Early Warning and Evacuation, and Workshop on Damage and Needs Assessment”.
The Information Caravan started in 2006, is designed to inform, increase awareness, educate and communicate to all Bicolanos in layman’s language the intricate technical details of the geohazard maps of the different LGUs through the capability enhancement of members of the MDRRMC and BRRMCs of the Bikol region in the formulation of the disaster risk reduction management plans. The IEC Caravan covered 6 Provinces, 114 Municipalities and Cities and 3,471 Barangays of the Bicol region in a span of Ten (10) years.
The program highlights the indispensable role of the MGB that complements the proactive effort of the national government to engage in climate change adaptation.
