The recent landslide incidents in Itogon, Benguet and Naga City, Cebu that resulted in the deaths and damage to properties prompted DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu through Director Wilfredo G. Moncano to suspend all quarry operations in Regions I, III, IV-Calabarzon, V, VII, X, XI and XIII for fifteen (15) days. Simultaneously, he also instructed all Regional Directors to conduct immediate safety/quarrying operations under their respective areas of jurisdiction to prevent repetition of similar landslide incidents. Results of these inspection and assessment will be the basis in the lifting of the suspension of these mines/quarries.
The suspension order in Bicol was issued on September 24, 2018. A total of eight (8) field parties were sent to assess hazards such as cracks, fissures, soil creeps, faults and other identification of possible rock or soil movements that pose danger to the safety of nearby communities. A report is expected in three days after their field outing. To see a better picture of the assessed area, drone shots shall be taken.
The assessment will identify elements at risk due to quarry operations. Whatever imminent threat to the local community will be brought to the attention of the local community for appropriate action.
